A residence and wildlife-friendly sanctuary

Description

Jackie Davis is the owner of Hazelwood, a property situated in Hobbys Yards, approximately 38km southwest of Bathurst, New South Wales. The property is a residence and wildlife sanctuary, also used to house several horses. Jackie intends to continue using the property for these purposes whilst enhancing the natural vegetation on the land. She plans to provide better habitat for wildlife on the property, in particular for koalas which are native to the area.

The property covers approximately 0.8 hectares and is bounded on three sides by large grazing properties. Although the property is situated in the village, the natural vegetation provides shelter for wildlife in the otherwise open country.

Vegetation on the property is dominated by various eucalypts and she-oaks (Casuarina spp.). Wattles (Acacia spp.), bottlebrushes (Callistemon spp.), westringias and butterfly bushes (Buddleja spp.) are also present. Several exotic species such as roses (Rosa spp.) also provide food and habitat for native species.

A wide range of wildlife is present on the property including brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudochierus peregrinus) possums, splendid (Malurus splendens) and superb (Malurus cyaneus) fairy wrens, magpies (Cracticus tibicen), magpie-larks (Grallina cyanoleuca), willlie wagtails (Rhipidura leucophrys), dollar birds (Eurystomus orientalis), pied currawongs (Strepera graculina) and various finches. A variety of parrots such as crimson rosellas (Platycercus elegans), galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita) and red-rumped parrots (Psephotus haematonotus) are also present.
