Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / NSW / Jigalong

Bill Chalmers and Linda Dening are the owners of Jigalong, a property situated approximately 30km east of Braidwood, NSW. Bill and Linda intend to conserve and improve the existing habitat on Jigalong by providing protection for existing plant and animal species, and regenerating the habitat from the river all the way back up to the remnant vegetation in the hills.

Jigalong covers 98.3 hectares of native pasture, orchids, forbs, lilies, rushes and sedges, shrubs and trees. A run of hills slopes down to the river flats with Charleyong Creek on the western boundary and 2 km of river frontage on the Mongarlowe River. This is lined by mature and younger manna gums (Eucalyptus viminalis) and many other subspecies.

Located within 10 km of two state forests, a National Park and a nature reserve, the property is part of a large area that provides habitat for bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), red-necked (Macropus rufogriseus) and swamp (Wallabia bicolor) wallabies, platypuses (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), and an abundance of birds, snakes and lizards.

The sanctuary is part of a larger habitat area, located within 10km of Yadboro State Forest, Budawang National Park Mapleton State Forest and the Nadgigomar Nature Reserve.
