A home and wildlife-friendly sanctuary

Description

Sharyn Munro is the owner of a property located approximately 30km north of Taree. The property is a home and wildlife-friendly sanctuary, and while encouraging wildlife on its entirety, it is Sharyn's intent to regenerate vegetation on approximately two thirds of the land and occasionally cell graze horses on the remaining third to control weeds in a cleared area, whilst planting more trees there. She also plans to construct a dam to encourage water birds, provide a year round source for wildlife, and remove the need for horses to access the creek.

The sanctuary covers 2 hectares of land sloping between a ridge and creek, most of which has been formerly cleared for pasture with remnant riparian vegetation along the creek line and in the creek-flat paddock, and vegetated fence lines along the slope. Vegetation is typically comprised of subtropical rainforest trees such as red cedars (Toona ciliata), water gums (Tristaniopsis laurina), prickly paperbarks (Melaleuca styphelioides) and lillipillis (Syzygium smithii) along the creek and fence lines, with casuarinas and acacias on the slopes.

Examples of wildlife species known to be found on the property include red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) and a wide variety of bird species such as willy wagtails (Rhipidura leucophrys), welcome swallows (Hirundo neoxena), grey shrike-thrushes (Colluricincla harmonica), Pacific koels (Eudynamys orientalis), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), magpies (Cracticus tibicen), several honeyeaters, doves and finches, galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla), lorikeets, black cockatoos, and water birds like Pacific black ducks (Anas superciliosa), purple swamp hens (Porphyrio porphyrio) and eastern great egrets (Ardea alba modesta). As Sharyn has only recently moved to the property, it is expected that this list will grow significantly over time.
