A residence and wildlife-friendly sanctuary, also used for commercial beekeeping

Description

Greg and Deborah McLaughlin are the owners of Bulwarra, a property situated in Bowral, approximately 45km west of Wollongong, New South Wales. The property is a residence and wildlife-friendly sanctuary, also used for commercial beekeeping. It is Greg and Deborah’s intent to educate the public about the impacts of drought on vegetation and honey production. They also intend to revegetate areas of the property with native plants to stabilize soils whilst attracting and supporting more bees and native birds.

The property covers approximately 2.83 hectares, with vegetation dominated by grasslands and brown-barrel (Eucalyptus fastigata) woodland. Situated on the southern side of Mount Gibraltar, the property is positioned next to a walking track adjoining 20 hectares of bushland and 40 hectares of grassland.

A vast array of wildlife is present on Bulwarra including eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), eastern (Platycercus eximius) and crimson (Platycercus elegans) rosellas, laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), king parrots (Alisterus scapularis), sulphur-crested (Cacatua galerita) and black (Calyptorhynchus spp.) cockatoos, galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla) and honey bees (Apis mellifera).
