Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / NSW / Charlton Farm

Dean and Jennifer Longstaff are the owners of Charlton Farm, a property situated in Wherrol Flat, approximately 75km southwest of Port Macquarie, New South Wales. The property is a residential lifestyle block and sanctuary for wildlife, and it is Dean and Jennifer’s intention to rehabilitate the bushland and riparian areas for local native species. The owners are currently in the process of regenerating the existing bushland and removing invasive weed species.

The property spans approximately 40 hectares and has 300 metres of frontage to Dingo Creek. Topography ranges from steep slopes to gently undulating hills, with a strong canopy cover throughout most of the property. Vegetation consists of dry sclerophyll woodland interspersed with pockets of wet sclerophyll, with half of the property partially cleared for grazing.

Wildlife known to inhabit the property includes eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), lace monitors (Varanus varius), snakes and a wide variety of bird and insect species. The riparian zone supports a range of species and may provide habitat for the endangered Manning River helmeted turtle (Myuchelys purvisi).
