A dedicated wildlife sanctuary used for recreation

Description

Jaime Warren is the owner of Neeraway, a property located approximately 40km north of Gympie. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary also used for recreation, and it is Jaime's vision to create a safe haven for the butterflies, birds and various native wildlife species inhabiting the area by assisting the recovery of native vegetation types through natural regeneration.

The sanctuary covers approximately 0.53 hectares of former pine plantation, which were removed and de-stumped by Jaime after he purchased the property in 2004. Originally Corymbia citriodoraEucalyptus portuensisE. fibrosa subsp. fibrosa open forest on remnant Tertiary surfaces (Queensland Regional Ecosystem 12.5.7), vegetation on Neeraway is currently regenerating wattles and eucalypts on an almost vacant block with lilly pillys, grass trees (Xanthorrhoea spp.), grevillea, kangaroo paw and mostly other natives also present.

Wildlife species known to occur on the sanctuary include swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), magpies (Cracticus tibicen), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), lace monitors (Varanus varius), a variety of frogs, and bird species such as blue-faced honeyeaters (Entomyzon cyanotis), swallows, rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita) and noisy friarbirds (Philemon corniculatus).
