A wildlife sanctuary and site for the rehabilitation and release of wallabies

Description

Linda and Peter Stucki are the owners of a property located in Millstream, approximately 300km northeast of Townsville, Queensland. The property is managed as a wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation site, and it is Linda and Peter’s intent to establish a sanctuary for orphaned wildlife and to rehabilitate and release wildlife on the property. Linda is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator with Tableland Wildlife Rescue, and primarily rescues orphaned agile wallabies.

The property covers 1.01 hectares backing onto a property adjoining Millstream National Park. The property is situated near Vine Creek and Millstream River, and features a dam. The property was originally a farm, so vegetation mainly consists of buffalo (Bouteloua dactyloides) and cockatoo grass (Alloteropsis semialata). As there are no naturally occurring trees on the property, Linda and Peter are currently revegetating with various eucalypts, grevilleas, bottlebrushes (Callistemon spp.) and tea trees (Leptospermum spp.). The sanctuary features indoor and outdoor enclosures for the rehabilitation and soft release of agile wallabies.

Wildlife found on the property includes eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), agile (Macropus agilis) and whiptail (Macropus parryi) wallabies, rufous (Aepyprymnus rufescens) and northern bettongs (Bettongia tropica), northern quolls (Dasyurus hallucatus), carpet pythons (Morelia spilota), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus), superb fairy-wrens (Malurus cyaneus) and various honeyeaters. A variety of frogs such as white-lipped tree frogs (Litoria infrafrenata), green tree frogs (Litoria caerulea) and burrowing frogs (Heleioporus spp.) are also present.
