Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / QLD / Birdsong Sanctuary

Peter Richards and Cathi Kelly are the owners of Birdsong sanctuary, a property situated in Rosenthal Heights, approximately 80km south of Toowoomba, Queensland. The property is a residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary, also housing facilities for microbat and flying-fox rehabilitation. Peter and Cathi are in the process of regenerating the property by removing weeds, revegetating native species and removing barbed wire fencing.

The property spans approximately 8.09 hectares of previously cleared land interspersed with ironbarks and wattles. Since cattle were removed, eucalypt regrowth has been occurring across the property. It is situated close to an uncleared forest and features one large dam.

An abundance of wildlife is present including a mob of eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), red necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus), rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus), galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla), willie wagtails (Rhipidura leucophrys), black-faced cuckoo shrikes (Coracina novaehollandiae), noisy miners (Manorina melanocephala), magpies (Cracticus tibicen), butcher birds, finches and swallows. White-faced herons (Egretta novaehollandiae) and white ibis (Threskiornis molucca) occasionally visit the property, as well as a black-shouldered kite (Elanus axillaris).
