A residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation centre.

Description

Len Varley and Jackie Cullen are the owners of The Wattles, a property located approximately 15km west of Devonport, Tasmania.

The property is a residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary, and as Len and Jackie have been active in marine conservation, they are aiming to establish a wildlife rehabilitation facility. Len and Jackie also hope to continue to raise awareness and educate the public using the large property as a base. The property is also registered under the voluntary Tasmanian Land for Wildlife program.

The property covers 2.6 hectares with local vegetation types featuring natural bush and rainforest environments. Wildlife species known to inhabit the sanctuary include duck–billed platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) possums, sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), long-nosed potaroos (Potorous tridactylus), Tasmanian pademelons (Thylogale billardierii) and Bennetts wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus), and a species of burrowing crayfish (Engaeus granulatus) which is endemic to a small region near Devonport in Tasmania.
