Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / SA / Windmill Grass Refuge

Julie Starkey and Gary Wright are the owners of Windmill Grass Refuge, a property situated in Wilmington, approximately 90km north of Port Pirie, South Australia. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary, and the owners wish to maintain it for the benefit of native species. A Native Vegetation Heritage Agreement provides permanent protection for 4.8 hectares of high-value habitat on the property.

The property covers 8 hectares, with 4.85 hectares comprised of high value Peppermint Box (Eucalyptus odorata) Grassy Woodland. The remainder of the property consists of a house block, paddocks and lower quality native woodland.

Wildlife is abundant on the property and includes eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus) and over 60 identified bird species.
