Karen and Chris Lane are the owners of Tloperi, a property situated on Hindmarsh Island in South Australia. Originally a dairy farm, the property is now a dedicated wildlife sanctuary which the owners have extensively revegetated over the last 11 years. Karen and Chris wish to continue their habitat restoration work, with plans to live off-grid on the property in the future.
The property spans 33 hectares of previously pastoral land, revegetated with approximately 65,000 locally Indigenous plants over the course of 11 years. It now hosts a range of ecological communities including old inland dune systems, grassy ephemeral wetlands, woodlands and open grasslands.
A wide range of wildlife is present on the property including western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus), five species of microbat and five species of native frog, which occur when wetlands are flooded. Rare butterflies including mottled grass skippers (Anisynta cynone), bitterbush blues (Theclinesthes albocincta) and grassland coppers (Lucia limbaria) are also present.
The property provides habitat for over 50 species of native bird, many of which are threatened. These include elegant (Neophema elegans) and blue-winged parrots (N. chrysostoma), brush bronzewings (Phaps elegans) and Cape Barren geese (Cereopsis novaehollandiae). Orange-bellied parrots (N. chrysogaster) have also previously been sighted on the property.
